Why do I need travel medical insurance
Your government health insurance plan coverage is limited while traveling outside of your province of residence.
Credit card protections have specific limitations and requirements that may be significantly different that those offered by more traditional policies. Be prudent and carefully read the limitations and coverage they offer.
You are responsible for expenses and costs resulting from sickness or injury if the travel insurance plan you have purchased does not cover those expenses on your behalf. Some hospitals charge thousands a day to cover their costs, and fees associated with services such as diagnostic services etc. are payable separately.

Why should I buy trip cancellation and interruption insurance?
Planning a trip is an exciting experience and a big investment. You take the time to organize your trip, make your reservations, apply necessary payments and plan your days of fun and relaxation. However, what would happen if you prevented from taking your trip? You could lose the money you have invested on your vacation project! Trip cancellation and interruption insurance protects the pre-paid portion of your travel arrangements.
-
Is there a deductible on Tour+Med Travel Insurance policies?
There are no automatic deductibles on any of our plans. However, customers who want to save have the option to accept a deductible that will reduce the required premium. For example, on our medical plans, we do offer the option to choose a traditional deductible to obtain a discount. A $250 deductible could translate into a 10% discount.
-
Can I extend my emergency medical coverage if I extend my trip?
Yes, you can extend your medical coverage if you extend your trip. You must contact us at least 5 days prior to the expiration date and pay the additional premium (if any is required). Coverage cannot be extended after the expiration date or if your trip expected to exceed the number of days allowable under your government health insurance plan.
Any condition for which you have been treated during the initial period of the policy will automatically be excluded from the first day of the extended period.
In case of a delay considered to be beyond your control the policy period will automatically be extended up to 72 hours at no extra charge.
-
Is it necessary to read my policy?
We strongly recommend that you read your travel insurance policy immediately upon receipt. Your policy is a contract and it contains pertinent information regarding your coverage. In every insurance policy there will be a list of things which are not covered. Make sure that you understand these clauses before departing. Tour+Med offers you a 10-day review period to verify the accuracy of your declaration and application. If you are not completely satisfied, any premium paid will be fully refunded, providing you have not taken any trip during the review period.
-
Do you cover pre-existing medical conditions?
We will cover your pre-existing conditions if you meet the stability and eligibility requirements. Our medical questionnaire constitutes a declaration and our underwriting program was created to cover your pre-existing conditions that are stable and controlled. If your health status changes prior your departure date or the effective date, you must advise us.
-
Do you allow top-ups?
If you are covered under your employee benefit program or through your credit card, the protections offered usually cover you for a limited period of time. Tour+Med offers complementary insurance that will cover for the period exceeding the initial coverage. However you are responsible for verifying that complementary insurance is permitted by the issuer of the travel insurance policy provided through your employee benefit program or your employer. A top up fee of $25 per applicant will be applicable.

Why do I need coverage when traveling in Canada?
Your government health plan covers medical costs everywhere in Canada. However, the provincial and territorial provincial health plans vary from one province/territory to another.
Not only can the differences in coverage be significant, your health plan may not pay the same rates for health services and it does not cover prescribed drugs, ambulance charges, emergency dental care and repatriation. Before you leave your home province, we recommend that you carefully review and understand your government health plan coverage.
